Employment
Nanaimo's economy is booming and the city is currently experiencing a labour shortage. The labour shortage reflects the realities of falling unemployment rates across Canada, including BC and Vancouver Island. The jobless rate recently hit six percent nationally, and in Nanaimo it's only slightly higher at 6.3%. The shortage of skilled labourers is something new on Vancouver Island. Until recently only the most specialized jobs were difficult to fill. It's a sign that the Island economy is changing. (Nanaimo News Bulletin, Thursday, August 23, 2007)
