Chamber Overview

Mission Statement

The Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce strives to enhance the quality of life in our community by providing opportunities for businesses to succeed.

What is a Chamber of Commerce?

The Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce is a not-for-profit organization comprised of businesses, professionals, residents and community groups working collectively to ensure a healthy economic base and positive socio-economic structure that benefits Nanaimo. The Nanaimo Chamber receives no government funding and relies solely on membership dues and other fundraising events to support its activities. This independence from government funding frees the Chamber to be a strong, independent advocate on behalf of the business community, so we truly are the Voice of Business.

How does the Chamber of Commerce work?

The policies and programs of the Chamber are determined by its Board of Directors, who are elected by the membership. The Directors employ staff who are responsible for organizing and executing Chamber programs and promoting Board policies.

What does your Chamber of Commerce do?

The Chamber represents and promotes business in Nanaimo. We speak on matters affecting our members, research business issues, encourage investment, work to broaden the tax base, support crime prevention programs, recognize the importance of education in providing employment skills, are aware of environmental and cultural issues and maintain contact and work with politicians to improve the manner and method of doing business in Nanaimo, British Columbia and Canada. For newcomers, we are a primary resource for researching and understanding our community.

Annually the Board and Staff reviews and updates the Strategic Plan as necessary. Click here for the current Strategic Plan.

Who finances the Chamber of Commerce?

The Chamber is a ‘Business’ and our cost of operation and expenses are similar to those of many of our members. Our expenses are paid for by membership dues and fund-raising activities throughout the year. Annually we set goals, establish a budget and prepare written reports. We work within our budget and thanks to the support of our members, staff and volunteers we are able to provide the services and programs that are expected from a Chamber of Commerce.

Why join the Chamber of Commerce?

The Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce sells Nanaimo and all that it offers – and we promote member products and services. We are your watchdog – we take on issues that affect you and your business. Members benefit from full-time representation and year-round results.

By being united, we are a voice that is heard and recognized. When we speak we have an impact and a track record that started in 1889.
